The UK debut of hit US TV show Glee looks set to make a significant impact on the singles chart this Sunday.
The Glee Cast’s recording of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, which features in the final scene of the opening programme as well as on trailers for the show, is set to chart in or around the top ten this Sunday according to the Official Charts Company, while Journey’s original song is on course to stay in the top ten.
Glee Cast also look set to chart with covers of Amy Winehouse’s Rehab, Kanye West’s Gold Digger and Rihanna’s Take A Bow, all of which feature in the show’s first two programmes. The show has already had an impact on the US charts, where the cast’s cover of Don’t Stop Believin’ entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number four last May.
Since then, new tracks have been released in the US on the back of each episode, racking up more than 2.5m downloads between them.
Initial TV ratings show that Glee attracted an audience of 1.3m to E4 on Monday night. It is set to air again on E4 this Thursday and on C4 on Sunday.
Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot says, “There is no doubting the impact that Glee is going to have on the chart this week, and possibly over the coming weeks. Glee is a new cultural phenomenon - and the music charts are reflecting this, just as they did in the US last year.”
